cqen.list Weekly Digest Subject: Misunderstandings of the Deming Philosophy Subject: reengineering in group practice HMO Subject: Re: None ---------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 22 Sep 1995 18:01:10 -0700 From: Myron Tribus Subject: Misunderstandings of the Deming Philosophy Here is another way to address the question so ably treated by David Kerridge. The Paradigms we get from Education (formal and informal) The Managerial System (the way managers behave) The Social System (How People Relate ) The Technical System (The Tools & Techniques) Every system is imbedded in the one above. Deming taught us to think of all of these systems at once. He developed his "System of Profound Knowledge" to help us see the connections. The major difficulty we face in trying to spread the message is that whenever you introduce a new paradigm to someone, that someone tries to understand it in terms of the paradigm he or she already has. THEY CAN DO NO OTHER. That is why when we speak of some gem we picked up from reading Dr. Deming's works, we are met with stares, either of disbelief or wonder that we speak of such trivial matters. I've often heard Dr. Deming say, "This is so simple, it's stupid! Today, people who conventionally educated and trained, are able to focus only one one system at a time, and unable to understand that what is done in the managerial system changes the social system and that if a tool or technique requires cooperation across functional lines, it will not be used in an organization where the management creates competition among groups as a way to get people to work harder. The last election was won on the slogan, "It's the economy, stupid." Some day, maybe, we will hear politicians say, "It's the system, stupid. The whole system." By the way, if you print this out, be sure to use monospace type, such as Courier or Monaco. Otherwise my art work above will be destroyed. We are about to institute this with CSC corp and I Have been asked to be the medical groups liaison as a full time position, giving up my practice. It seems as though there will be a period of turmoil. Are these programs successful, and how can we assure ourselves of this success. Thanks for any input.
