RE: Malcolm Baldridge

DEN,
A colleague of mine was with Motorola at the time they earned the
Malcolm Baldridge award. His comments about the process follow Howard's
line of thought.

"It was never a goal of the "six sigma program" to win the award....in
fact, it was always known that if we (Motorola) did all the right things
the awards would always follow."

With that... I have been with companies (in Australia and the US) that
sought ISO registration, for example, because of some vaguely perceived
marketing advantage. In the end the Australian company almost went
under (pun intended). Executives pronounce the marketing advantage of
the awards and registration, however Marketing never shared executive
enthusiasm. At Motorola the attitude was that the Award was a by
product of the way they did business.

Solders never go into battle hoping to get the Medal of Honor.
