What is ASQ?

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) ( has been the leading quality improvement organization in the United States for more than 50 years. Its members have initiated most of the quality methods used throughout the world, including statistical process control, quality cost measurement and control, total quality management, failure analysis, and zero defects.

ASQ has more than 117,000 individual and 1,100 corporate sustaining members worldwide. Individual members belong to one of 247 local Sections located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and an international chapter. ASQ also has 22 industry—and topic-specific Divisions.

Quality Press, ASQ's book and standards publishing group, offers peer-reviewed titles ranging from the latest presentation of the fundamentals to the newest advancements in quality. Quality Press is the nation's largest publisher of books on quality.

A year-round offering of instruction, home study, and in-house courses are provided through ASQ's education area. ASQ offers quality-related courses taught by highly qualified instructors from business, industry, and academia.

ASQ's monthly Quality Progress has a circulation of 130,000. The magazine covers the latest developments in the quality field. Each issue includes articles on quality methods and philosophies, intended to educate and inspire quality practitioners. Portions of the magazine are available online at www.asq.org.

Since 1968, nearly 80,000 certifications have been awarded to professionals through ASQ's programs. Forty countries offer ASQ's programs as their method for certification. ASQ conducts professional certification programs in ten different areas of expertise including quality engineers, quality managers, and software engineers, to name a few.

ASQ offers several major conferences per year, the largest being the Annual Quality Congress (AQC) and Exposition. Each year thousands of attendees exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world. The proceedings of the Congress are published, providing a source on new quality technologies and applications.

Typical of ASQ's activities is its administration of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The annual award is the highest level of national recognition for quality achievement that a U.S. firm can receive.

ASQ's Quality Information Center (QIC) offers reference, referral, and research services on quality-related topics. The QIC resource base includes a database of several thousand documents from the published sources of ASQ (including Quality Progress, Quality Management Journal, the Journal of Quality Technology, Quality Engineering, Technometrics, the Annual Quality Congress, and ASQ division proceedings) and referral sources as well as a supporting research library.

The Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB), a separately incorporated affiliate of ASQ, is engaged in ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 accreditation and certification activities. RAB is a partner with the American National Standards Institute in the National Accreditation Program (NAP) which accredits registrars and training course providers. The NAP process ensures customers and other stakeholders that companies have implemented proper management systems as defined by the ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards. RAB independently operates the U.S. certification programs for both ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 auditors. These programs provide assurance that individuals are qualified to audit management systems against the requirements of recognized standards.

ASQ was incorporated as the American Society for Quality Control in 1946 as the result of the merger of several local quality societies that had formed after wartime statistical quality control classes. The classes were held to improve and maintain the quality of defense materials during World War II. To meet the needs of a changing marketplace, the organization changed its name to the American Society for Quality in 1997.
